Not least due to its heightened drama, the St John Passionoccupies a very special place among Johann Sebastian Bach’s oratorios, making it particularly attractive for staged presentations. When the director Peter Sellars joined forces with conductor Sir Simon Rattle in 2014 to render his perspective of the Passion of Christ, the production became a benchmark. Performed by the Orchestra and Choir of the Age of Enlightenment, this interpretation is now revived.
