Carlo Gesualdo - Tenebrae Responsoria

Bach to Beach, Lieder Abend

Carine Tinney, Soprano

Daniel Tarrida, Piano

A touch of the avant-garde

Carine Tinney, Soprano

Age-Freerk Bokma, Organ

René Uijlenhoet, Electronics

Specially for this concert, the ever-adventurous organist Age-Freerk Bokma will let himself be inspired by the two completely different organs in the Lutheran church: the Van Oeckelen organ (1896) which is particularly suited to more Romantic repertoire, and the Edskes-Schnitger organ (inaugurated in 2017) which is a reconstruction of a typically Baroque organ.

Scottish soprano Carine Tinney and the composer René Uijlenhoet will be accompanying Bokma in this trip to Groningen; Uijlenhoet is well-known for his electronic compositions, and three of these will be on the programme today. The audience will be treated to a thrilling combination of the acoustic sounds of the organ with the soprano’s human voice and the computer’s electronic sounds – sometimes pre-programmed and sometimes manipulated live from the microphones placed in the organ. The title of the concert says it all: today’s theme is the colours of music.

A concert for the connoisseur!

Carlo Gesualdo - Tenebrae Responsoria

  • Haapsalu linn, Toomkirik, Jaani kirik (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

On the evening of July 26, be ready for a spectacle in the Haapsalu Dom Church in which two musical innovators meet – the ensemble Graindelavoix and the composer Gesualdo. Graindelavoix, the main performers at this year’s Haapsalu Early Music Festival, are an award-winning Belgian vocal ensemble with a stellar global reputation. The group will perform Tenebrae Responsoria by Carlo Gesualdo – one of the most radical composers of the late Renaissance era. There will be special chiaroscuro lights installed in the Haapsalu Dom Church for the performance. This will be a wonderful concert for shaking off daily routines, introspection, and cleansing the spirit. The name of the ensemble – Graindelavoix – could be translated as „the grain of the voice“ or „the core of the voice“. When you have heard the ensemble perform, you will understand.

The art of sacred allegory from Mantua to Venice

« The art of sacred allegory from Mantua to Venice »
Works by Dufay, Agricola, Isaas and anonymous

Graindelavoix

With this concert, Graindelavoix tries to prove the extent to which the music of the Italian Renaissance established a visual and gestural culture.

The major masterpieces of Mantegna, Botticelli and Crivelli are reflected in the music of Franco‑Flemish masters such as Agricola, Isaac and Dufay. When you see how those composers were able to ‘recycle’ profane music to evoke the sacred figures of Christ, the Virgin or Saint Sebastian, you will realise that remixes are, in fact, a decidedly ancient invention.

Bach: St John Passion

In his two epochal settings of the Passion – according to St Matthew and to St John – Johann Sebastian Bach distilled the essence of his church music and his theological message. However the right performance context has always been a subject of debate: both works go beyond the scope of any liturgical use, and the structure in each case with recitatives, arias, dialogues and choruses calls clearly for scenic realisation. Thus American star producer Peter Sellars and Sir Simon Rattle collaborated to perform the St Matthew Passion on the stage of Berlin’s Philharmonie in 2010, and the St John Passion followed four years later. Sellars's approach is based on his conviction that »This is not theatre. It's a prayer, a meditation.«

Bach: St John Passion

Not least due to its heightened drama, the St John Passionoccupies a very special place among Johann Sebastian Bach’s oratorios, making it particularly attractive for staged presentations. When the director Peter Sellars joined forces with conductor Sir Simon Rattle in 2014 to render his perspective of the Passion of Christ, the production became a benchmark. Performed by the Orchestra and Choir of the Age of Enlightenment, this interpretation is now revived.

GESUALDO: TENEBRAE RESPONSORIA

GRAINDELAVOIX / BJÖRN SCHMELZER

Nuit Gesualdo
